The Katoomba is a scenic railway with a cable driven funicular railway in the world. It has the steepest incline of fifty two degrees. It was basically constructed for oil and coal mining operation in the Jamison valley in 1880s. The coal mine was closed in 1945 after which it has survived and thrived as a popular local tourist attraction.
